We can count ourselves lucky that Germany is one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the world. This is due to the good soil properties and favorable climatic conditions. However, we should be aware that soil is a non-renewable resource or one that is difficult to renew. In order to maintain the high fertility of our soils in Germany, we must cultivate them sustainably. However, humus, and therefore soil, can also be built up through appropriate soil cultivation.
In future, a soil status survey will be carried out in Germany every ten years in order to record possible changes in carbon stocks and soil properties. It will thus become an important basis for our future soil protection and climate policy.
