In 1940, JI Rodale and his wife bought a run-down farm in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. In 1947, JI Rodale founded the Soil and Health Foundation, which was later renamed the Rodale Institute. The Rodale Institute is a non-profit organization based in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, dedicated to growing the regenerative organic agriculture movement through rigorous research, farmer training and education. In its more than 75-year history, the Rodale Institute has demonstrated that organic agriculture is not only viable, but essential to the survival of humanity.
The Rodale has been working on field trials for plowless tillage for over 40 years: in 1981 they started their comparative studies on organic versus conventional agriculture and on plowing and plowless tillage, which are still ongoing today.
